Gary Hamel
2011 Ranking: #15
Gary Hamel is a visiting professor at London Business School, and the founder of Strategos, an international consulting firm based in Chicago. The opinionated, sometimes acerbic, voice of contemporary strategy, Hamel has produced a steady stream of innovative management ideas.
Hamel has written 15 articles for the Harvard Business Review and has authored or co-authored a number of books. He is probably best known for Competing for the Future (1996) – the book the co-authored with the late CK Prahalad, which outlined the ideas of core competences and strategic intent (originally published in HBR). His other books include Strategic Flexibility: Managing in a Turbulent Environment (with Prahalad, 1999); Leading the Revolution (2000); and The Future of Management (with Bill Breen, 2007).
More recently Hamel (together with Julian Birkinshaw from London Business School) founded the Management Lab (MLab). The MLab is a non-profit organization based in Silicon Valley, which aims "to create a setting in which progressive companies and world renowned management scholars work together to co-create 'tomorrow's best practices' today. The goal is to radically accelerate the evolution of management knowledge and practice."
